"Even by the standards of political pandering Supervisor Mars irresponsibility was breathtaking to watch."
Get ready to be blindsided by a barrage of new "smart" parking meters San Francisco. They'll be coming to city streets courtesy of Supervisor Eric Mar and Supervisor John Avalos who approved a 54 Million Dollar contract to procure 33,000 new parking meters. The expense of feeding these new parking meters will be passed directly on to small businesses and ordinary citizens who cannot afford to rent a space in a private parking garage.
After months of meetings and countless discussions with the Eastern Neighborhood groups, merchants and Supervisors, SFMTA passed Ordinance # 5071 including plans to install parking meters, and called for a public hearing on November 1, 2013, with a week’s notice to a select few neighbors. SFMTA committed to working with the community on a comprehensive parking managment plan for the entire neighborhood. Now they’ve broken that promise.
Incomes for the rich have soared this decade but middle class workers have seen their wages stagnate and even drop since the 2008 Great Recession. Thousands of new "market rate"parking meters don't bode well for working class families, and retirees who who are too poor to own a home with its own built-in parking, or a dedicated parking space. Where is the city going to put these new parking meters? As Harry Browne said, government is adept at breaking people's legs, then handing them a pair of crutches and saying, "See if it weren't for us, you wouldn't be able to walk!"
"Nonetheless, the Five year Financial Plan shows the cost of city services is projected to steadily outpace revenue growth during the five year period. If the City does not take corrective action, the gap between revenues and expenditures will rise from $283 million to approximately $829 million from FY 2011 ‐ to FY 2015 - 16."
Its no surprise that SFMTA salaries and benefits are growing faster than agency revenues.
"By 2016 San Francisco will be spending more on pensions and retiree health care than they're spending for police, fire, the district attorney and the public defender."

Sadly, the new "smart" parking meters will used to bilk taxpayers, and generate unlimited revenue for the city for years to come. The simple lesson we can all take away from this is to stop voting for "Bicycle Happy" City Supervisors who use parking as a way to balance budgets.
Remember this the next time the city requests more bonds to improve your driving experience. VOTE NO! If you drive a car, vote NO on any more funds for Muni or the SFMTA. The next time you elect a city Supervisor VOTE NO if they start parroting 'transit first" as an excuse to bleed your wallet. Regardless of what they promise, the funds will be used against you. If your city Supervisor wants you to give up the safety of your family car to ride a bicycle on busy city streets then VOTE THEM OUT!
Price Gouging, Market Manipulation, and Artificially Inflating Consumer Prices. SFMTA uses the ENRON model for pricing. How did that work out for you last time California? It's another one of those artificially induced parking "blackouts" that are happening across the city. These parking spaces priced at $3.00 an hour have been empty for over a year and now the city will spend 54 Million Dollars to purchase 33,000 new parking meters.
Is this a neighborhood with "significant parking demand" or a clumsy government attempt to raid a captive parking market? Its another one of those artificially induced parking "blackouts" that are happening across the city.
The next time you elect a city Supervisor VOTE NO if they start parroting 'transit first" as an excuse to bleed your wallet. If they want you to give up the safety of your family car to ride a bicycle on busy city streets then VOTE THEM OUT!
